J’habite en banlieue. J’adore ma maison, mais j’aimerais bien d’avoir une maison en centre-ville. En Fort Collins, le centre-ville et très, très joli, et il y a beaucoup de petites maisons mignonnes. Les maisons en centre-ville sont près d’Old Town, ou il y a beaucoup de restaurants, cafés, et magasins. Je connais mes voisins, mais pas très bien… Si j’ai besoin d’une tasse du sucre ou d’un œuf, je peux les demander à un voisin, mais nous ne sommes pas des bons amis. La famille à droite de ma maison a un fils qui est un an plus jaune que moi, mais mes voisins à gauche sont un peu vieux... Je ne suis pas sure… Je crois que c’est important de parler avec les voisins, et de les connaître un peu—si on a un problème, il faut qu’on puisse les appeler—mais on ne doit pas être les meilleurs amis avec les voisins.
I think that the quality of life in Fort Collins, Colorado is generally quite good. It was rated the #1 Best City to Live In by Money Magazine. Of course, this is mainly because it is, for the most part, a white, middle-class town. (I’m allowed to say that, I fit perfectly in the category.) Other than that, though, Fort Collins really is a wonderful place to live. The school system is unlike most stereotypical public schools- There are some amazing teachers in Fort Collins, and although the funding isn’t as high as it should be, it’s not terrifyingly low. There are always activities going on for younger kids, and teenagers can usually find something fun to do as well. Of course, because Fort Collins is home of Colorado State University, there is sometimes a lack of things for people ages 15-20 to do… There are a lot of bars for the older college students, but this age group is rather neglected. If I could change anything about Fort Collins, it would be that- we can make our own fun, of course, but not all of it ends up being legal…

J'habite en banlieue, mais en général, je préfère d'habiter en ville, mais une grande ville- pas une petite ville comme Columbia. Je pense qu'Arlington, où j'habite est bien situé près du Washington D.C. est la ville d'Arlington est un mélange parfait de la ville et le banlieue. Je connais mes voisins, et nous sommes assez proches. Je pense que c'est très important de connaitre mes voisins, parce qu'en général les voisins sont des vrais amis et mes voisins sont comme famille à moi.
I think that life in Arlington is very good, but I think there definitely is a huge difference between life in "North Arlington" and "South Arlington" since North Arlington is primarily enhabited by wealthier families. I think the government of Arlington could do a better job of making living conditions in the north and south more equal, though I suppose money does buy a lot of the luxury associated with the north.
I'm not sure I would change anything about Arlington if I could... Sure, it's not a perfect place and sometimes traffic is annoying or county laws are not fun, but I don't mind. I really love the place I'm from and I'm proud to call it home.

J’habite en banlieue. Je préfère y habiter parce qu’elle est tranquille et peu peuplée. Il n’ya pas beaucoup de la circulation que je déteste. Je connais mes voisins un peu mais li n’ya pas beaucoup de personnes qui ont les mêmes ans de moi. Mais, il est important de connaître vos voisins parce que vous habitez dans la même communauté. Vous devrez vous entendre bien avec vos voisins.
The only problem with living in the suburbs is that there is very little or no public transportation. If it didn’t cost too much, I would improve the public transportation in my county. In the suburbs, you have to drive practically everywhere because buildings are so far apart. And without public transportation, everyone family, every person in fact, has to have a car. So you can often see one person driving a car that can hold 6 people. The pollution caused by this is horrible! So I think more buses or more passenger trains would risk some of the pollution.

J’habite en centre-ville. Je le préfère parce qu’il c’est plus facile pour mes études. J’aime l’aire du centre-ville avec les boutiques, les événements, et les peuples. Aussi, c’est plus pragmatique pour conduire à mes classes environnantes Columbia.
La plupart de mes voisins sont étudiants qui n’habitent dans le même appartement pour longtemps. Donc, ma famille ne peuvent pas connais mes voisins très bien. Au même temps, je pense qu’il est important pour les communautés à connaître ses voisins.
I think one of the best things that could be done for the City of Columbia would be to improve primary and secondary school education. South Carolina has one of the worst education systems in the United States. Because of this, many students drop out of school and end up involved criminal and gang activity. Accordingly, South Carolina has one of the highest crime rates in the United States. An improvement in the school education system would hopefully do something to decrease the exorbitant crime rates.
I would love to enlarge the Columbia guitar community. In cities like LA, Houston, Boston, or even Winston-Salem you find extremely active guitar communities. As one of a handful of high school guitarists in the city, I have very few peers to motivate me to become the best that I can.

Maintenant, j’habite à Columbia! Je suis heureuse d’être en ville et pas en banlieue. Je m’ennuyais toujours en banlieue à Richmond (en virginie). Chez moi en virginie, je connaissais mes voisins mais nous avions les vies séparées. Je regardais leurs animaux quand ils voyageaient et ils me paieraient mais je ne les voyais pas jusqu’au la prochaine fois qu’ils avaient besoin de moi.
Having a relationship with neighbors is important because of little needs such as pet sitting or if you lock yourself out. In my area in Virginia the population is mostly white middle class and many people have problems with overextending themselves. High school students especially run themselves extremely thin to compete for a spot in the ideal universities. If a weekly park day were established for every high school, students could escape the frenzied rush of high school life and enjoy the sunshine for a few hours during the school day.

J’habite en Richmond, Virginie. Ma maison est en banlieue, mais je passe beaucoup de temps en ville. Mon lycée était en ville et beaucoup d’endroits que je vais sont en ville. J’aime bien ma maison, mais je préfère la ville. New York est ma ville favorite, et en ville dans Richmond est comme un petit New York. Je ne connais pas mes voisins très bien, mais mon père a construit le quartier et alors il connaît chacun. Je pense que c’est important de connaître vos voisins ; puis, vous pouvez les faire confiance et leur dépendre dans les urgences.
In my city, I think the police focus on the wrong problems. Richmond is not a very safe place, but many policemen spend their time busting teenage parties. They barge in and send kids running, often jumping in cars and speeding away, even if they’ve been drinking. I think a good change for Richmond would be if the police started focusing on catching the murderers, rapists, and drug dealers on the streets, instead of just chasing teenagers. However, personally, I could help better the lives of people in Richmond by not participating in the activities that police focus on, such as drunk driving.

J'habite en banlieue de Cincinnati, Ohio. Mon voisinage est très bon, et je l'aime beaucoup. Il y a beaucoup de familles, et aussi il y a les trottoirs partout. Mais, j'ai envie d'habiter en ville. J'aime la vie en ville parce que c'est très animée, et on ne s'ennuie pas. Dans ma banlieue, je connais plus de mes voisins. Je pense que c'est très important.
I think that one downside to living in the city would be that you wouldn't know your neighbors; city-dwellers tend to be more distant from each other. I like to walk down my street and wave at everyone and know their names. Cincinnati, and especially my suburb, is a really nice place to live. We have really good school districts, and one of the best public park systems in the country. It's also close to downtown Cincinnati, which has professional sports teams, museums, playhouses, and fun things like that. The only thing that we lack is a good sidewalk system throughout the township, but they're working on that now, and also building a movie theater. One thing that we need is a bookstore. The closest one is about 20-30 minutes away! Other than that, there's not much that I would change about where I live.

J’habite en ville depuis toute ma vie. Je suis né à Orlando, une ville de 3.5 million d’habitants. J’ai habité à Londres et à New York aussi, donc je préfère le bruyant et l’activité de une grande ville. J’ai habité en banlieue d’Orlando avant j’ai déménage à l’Université de la Caroline du Sud, mais c’était vide et ennuyant. Je connais que je n’aime pas bien les quartiers hors du centre-ville comme ils sont moins animés. Heureusement, j’habite au centre-ville de Columbia maintenant.
Columbia is a very spread out city, so I think bringing people back into the downtown would help improve their lives. Cities in the United States are not like French cities in that often one cannot walk everywhere. Younger cities are designed around cars, rather than people, so the result of our dependency is a reliance on gasoline and a great deal of traffic. I wish Americans did not rely on cars so much, but unfortunately doing so is part of our culture. I do not think this will change anytime soon.

J’habite en banlieue, et je l’aime bien. Je n’ai jamais habité à la campagne, mais je pense que j’aimerais plus vivre en ville. À la campagne, je crois que je peux m’ennuyer trop vite. En ville, il y a toujours des choses amusantes à faire, mais à la campagne, on manque parfois des activités intéressantes.
I do know most of my neighbors, which is very important to me. If there are concerns, we should feel comfortable enough with each other to voice them. In my city, or at least in my school district, there are problems with dropout rates and gangs. I think that I could volunteer more often with kids, showing them that there are alternatives to such behavior. Honestly, it probably wouldn’t make a huge difference in the community, but maybe it would make a difference in at least one person’s life.

J’habite en ville, mais la ville est assez petite. Je n’aime pas habiter en comme petite ville, parce que il y a seulment un peu de magasins, et je ne peux pas trouver tout des nécessités. Je préfère habiter en une banlieue, parce que j’a le meilleur de le deux worlds. In the suburbs, one has lots of stores fairly close by, but the neighborhood is also small enough that you know most of your neighbors. It is very important to have a good relationship with at least a few neighbors, because they can help in an emergency, or are even a good person to just talk with sometimes.

I live near the center at 3 kilometers i think. My appartment is near too from the UTT. I do not know my neighbors because i just moved in that flat with two friends. I'm just happy to live there with them. I think it's better to live in a city than in country because there is more services and life is easier without a car.
On peut utiliser le bus ou bien son vélo ou même encore y aller a pied pour faire tout ce dont on a besoin de faire. La ville est bien plus pratique pour çà. Ce que j'aimerais changer dans ma ville c'est le nombre de feux rouges! Il paraît que c'est la première ville de france pour le nombre de feux au kilometre! Le trafic routier y est infernal à certaine heure.

I live in quite a small city called Troyes. I couldn't say that it is totally the countryside because this city's really got two opposite sides: at first the periphery which could be assimilate to countryside and where I live because of his numerous fields surrounding us. Next the town itself which is quite like living in a big city because of its hustle and bustle.
I do prefer being next to my university rather than shops or activities of the city center, it allows me to wake me up as late as possible. I also like the calm and the nature of countryside.
A la question est il important de connaître ses voisins, je répondrais à la fois oui et non.
Puisque je suis à la fois très copain avec certains voisins même si ce ne sont pas les plus proches, car ils habitent à 2 ou 3 étages de mon appartement et à la fois distant de mes voisins de palier. Je ne leur adresse la parole que pour leur dire bonjour. Je ne dis pas que c'est bien mais je ne vois pas trop quoi leur dire d'autres^^.
Je fais partie depuis peu d'une association qui a pour but de sensibiliser un maximum de personnes à la question de l'environnement, par exemple concernant le tri sélectif(qui consiste à trier les déchets pour mieux les recycler). J'aimerais par ce biais aider un peu la population de ma ville à prendre conscience de l'importance de ce tri sélectif.
Je touve justement que la question de l'environnement devrait etre au coeur de la politique publique de la ville et j'aimerais voir la mairie s'y impliquer plus.

First of all, I live in countryside, in a small town called Luynes. This town is very great to live with its castle and old houses. More and more people are going to move out into my town, so I do think it’s a welcoming city. There’s only one bar, one supermarket, but it’s enough for six thousands inhabitants. I prefer living in countryside because it’s the best way to stay away from the city hustle. I know my neighbours, I met and learnt to know them at first time, just after they moved out. I think it’s very important to know his neighbours because if anyone has a problem, we can help each other. Besides, neighbours can be new friends. If I need something, like a newspaper, I can ask my neighbours for it. In this way, I don’t feel embarrassed.
Dans ma ville, pour améliorer la vie des citoyens, je pense qu’il faudrait être plus strict sur les limitations de vitesse. Les gens roulent beaucoup trop vite et il y a des accidents. Les rues sont très étroites, car la ville date du XIIIème siècle. A part cela, j’aimerais qu’il y ait un plus gros complexe sportif dans ma ville. Celui qui est en place ne suffit pas je pense pour tous les adolescents de la ville. Nous avons seulement un stade et un gymnase assez délabré.

Depuis que j'habite à Troyes pour mes études, je commence un peu à découvrir la vie de la campagne car c'est une ville bien plus petite que Paris. Pour le moment je suis content d'avoir changer d'environement, car l'air ici est moins polué, la nature est plus présente et il est facile en prenant la voiture de se retrouver dans des petits coins tranquils. A Troyes les commerces sont tous regroupés dans le centre ville et sont accessibles en vélo.
However, in Paris, I could take very easily the bus or the metro, and there were many activities all the week like museums, cultural activities, big parties.
I think it's important to get in touch with the neighbours, but I failed on that...
The point is that they don't rally like when I invite friends at night because they go outside to smoke and make a lot af loud. My neighbours say they have a son who goes to college and needs to sleep, but I assume he would prefer coming to my parties.
Troyes is a very lovely city, and there are so mutch disadvantages in it, apart the bus : they stop really early. It would be nice if there were a night service.
In paris, traffic is unbelievable. Any time of the day you can be sure you will arrive late ! They have to do something about it.

J'habite à Troyes, à 10 minutes à pied du centre-ville. Avant cela, j'ai habité quelques années à la campagne, donc je peux dire avec objectivité ce que je préfère : la ville!!! Pour moi, habiter en ville est vital car quand j'ai besoin de quelque chose, je peux tout de suite sortir et aller le chercher. Quand on habite en ville, on peut voir ses amis, aller faire les magasins, sortir, aller au ciné... tandis qu'à la campagne il n'y a pratiquement aucune activité et, quand on a besoin de quelque chose, même urgent, hé bien il faut attendre.
De plus, la ville permet une ouverture sur les autres et une vie sociale très développée, ce qui est très difficile à la campagne. Pour les jeunes c'est donc bien mieux de vivre en ville!
In Troyes, I've neighbours but I don't know them. I just say 'Good morning!' to my left neighour (an old lady), and I know a little my neighbour of behind, because she's as young as me. My other neighbours are in their fifty years old, so we don't have anything in common. I do no have more relations with them. Nevertheless, I think it's important to have relations with the neighbours. If they were young people or students like me, perhaps we would be friends!
Troyes is a quite beautiful city, but I think that its means of transport are very bad. As public transport, we only have the bus, but they don't pass very often and they stop very early : when I quit the university in the evening, I must go walking to go back to house : it is not practical. So most people use their car, there are a lot of traffic jams, and it's very bad for our environnment.
In Troyes, driving is difficult too, because traffic can be quite anarchic.
If I could decide what to do, I would improve public transport : increase the buses and their frequency, and lower the cost of the ticket because I think it's quite expensive.

I live near the university in Troyes, a small town. It is divided into two parts the town center more lively with shops,dance halls, restaurants;and the suburb more scholastic. Personnally i prefer living in small town because it is quiet and nice. The traffic isn't as important as in big cities. It's an ideal place for studies. I don't really know my neighbours. I sometimes meet them in the hall and we just great each other and that's all.
Je pense pourtant que les relations entre voisins sont importantes parce que ces derniers peuvent nous aider dans certaines situations. Chez mes parents, je connais les voisins et on a des relations amicales. Ce qu'il faudrait ameliorer à Troyes c'est la ponctualité des bus publics. Ils arrivent souvent en retard et c'est très embêtant.

Avant j'habitais à la campagne, mais je n'étais pas très isolée de la ville qui se situait à 10 min en voiture.Je pense qu'il y a beaucoups d'avantage à vivre à la campagne plutôt qu'à la ville, l'air de la campagne est moins polué, il y a beaucoups moins de circulations donc moins de bruit, de beaux paysages,les voisin sont proches car en général peut nombreux.La seule ombre au tableau est la dificulté à se déplacer si vous n'avez pas de voiture, il n'y a aucune possibilité à part la marche à pied!
For my studies I live in Troyes. There is two parts, the first part with the university, the nature is more present,it's a very quiet spot.And the second part, the center with a lot of bars, the nightculbs, the shops...It's enought full on life on the contrary.I live in the first but I prefer the second just because of the bus stoping the transport at 20:40PM: it's earlier, and the supermarket very far from my home.

I think that american and french towns are very different. France has only four towns with iver a million people : Paris, Lille, Marseille and Lyon. My parents and my grandparents live in a town called Compiègne. It's a very beautiful town of 60000 inhabitants. Many people who live in the South of l'Oise work in Paris. My town is situated near Paris, 60 kms to the North, in Picardie, in the department of Oise. It's an agricultural region and very flat.
Pour moi je ne pourrais pas habiter dans une grande ville comme Paris. J'aime la nature et il me faut pouvoir le week end par exemple retrouver un peu de verdure. J'aime beaucoup ma ville de Compiègne car tout autour il y a une magnifique forêt qui compte parmi les plus belles de France ! La qualité de vie y est donc plutôt très bonne ! Et l'on parle et s'entraide beaucoup entre voisins.

Since my birth, I have never lived in countryside. Now for my studies, I live in the town centre of small city called Troyes; it’s completely different from Paris, but I like it. Personally I prefer living in city because they are a lot of advantages that suit me, that not mean, I hate countryside!!! I think it’s very important to know your neighbours, unfortunately, I don’t know them very well because I’ve been in my flat since a year.
Tout ville à des problèmes, Troyes est une petite ville où la vie presque disparaît le soir pendant la semaine, parce que le bus qui est le seul moyen de transports en ville finit à 21h, conséquence: les gens pensent toujours à comment ils vont revenir s'il partent au centre ville, ce qui leurs posent un grand problème.
