After thoughts on the trips

Please make 1 post on your thoughts about the trips (1/2 English, 1/2 French)....what was most interesting to you? What would you change next time around?

Then include 1-2 items of advice for next year's students for the trip (similiar to the handout you received).

    Le voyage en France était merveilleux. J’aimais tous les activités. Il n’y avais rien que je changerais. . . . Mais, j’aurais aimé dormir un petit plus. On était très occupé avec les visites à les villes et les diners. Les Français aiment leur diners ! Oui, ils boivent beaucoup de vins. Ou est l’eau ?! C’est vrai : les villes était très jolies. Amenez beaucoup de « SD cards » pour ton appareil de photos.

    Bien que j’ai amené beaucoup de choses, j’ai laissé un petit place dans ma valise pour mes souvenirs. Si tu aime les chaussures, tu dois laisser un grand place dans ta valise, parce que les chassures en France était très belles et à la mode. La mode en France est avant-garde. Je l'aime! J’ai acheté trop des chaussures—j’ai arrêté mettre les chaussures que j’ai amené vient de l’Etats-Unis. N’avez pas peur d’apporter beaucoup de choses (si tu en as besoin), parce que le prix pour la même chose en France était plus cher.

    I loved France. I loved the euros. Everything there is prettier and more sophisticated. The long history of the place is mind-boggling. My advice for future voyageurs is just to have fun. Kiss everyone. Jump head-first into immersing yourself into French culture. Make friends; be open to new ideas; speak French even if you don’t think you make sense. The French will wait for you to make your point. They are a wonderful lot of people. Perfect strangers are some of the most helpful—especially if you’re lost in Paris!!!!

    Don’t be afraid to spend money. It’s totally worth the extra 25-50 euros a day that you did not plan on spending. Buy the shoes when you see them. Drink all the coffee you can get because Starbuck’s will disappoint you once you return to the Newark airport. I wish that I never left the countryside of France. I’m jealous of whoever is headed back this summer. But one day, I’m living in France. . . It’s paradise on earth. Period.

    J'ai adoré les temps que nous avons passé en Paris et Troyes. Ma chose favorite était la champagne avec Jean Josselin et en Paris, J'ai adoré prendre le métro et voir le tour d'eiffel. Et je suis très heureuse que j'habillais bien quand j'ai marché sur Champs-Élysées. Bien que je pense que je ne peux pas habiter en France pour plus qu'une année, J'ai une nouvelle appréciation pous les gens et pour le pays. Par exemple, je pense que c'est un bon idée pour tous les personnes à conduire une petite voiture. Avant je vais retourné cet été, mon père m'enseignera comment conduire un manuel ainsi je vais préparer pour la France!

    Pour Changer:
    Nous avions beacoup d'activités pour chaque jour. Nous n'avions pas les temps libres a dormir pour une heure ou sortir avec nos hôtes et nos amis en Troyes. Au lieu des guides, nous devrions les avoir exploré tout seuls. Il aurait sauvegardé le temps et nous aurions pu parler autant que nous avons aimé. aussi, je souhaite que nous avions plus de repas tout seuls parce que les repas de trois heures sont trop longs. À un maximum, je pense que six heures par jour est une bonne quantité d'heure de dépenser avec le groupe américain entier.

    My Advice/Mes Conceils:

    -You can easily spend less than 200 euros in France-so totally do it! Don't shop, we have the same things at home. Then, you can use what you have left to come back in the summer, like I am doing! www.statravel.com that is all I have to say.
    -Bring a Digital Camera that takes regular batteries.
    -Do NOT windowshop. Most likely, you will step in poop.
    -Spend as much time as possible with your hosts. I was blessed to have the perfect hosts(Ghita and Chai) and the perfect neighbors(Alison and Fabien) who all had the perfect friends(Everyone else!). More than anything, I think it's important to establish friendships with your hosts and keypals. The sights will always be there, but it's harder to keep in touch with friends so make the most of it while you're there. Besides having awesome French friends you get to tell all you friends back home about, it's a chance to learn about France(its culture, politics, etc...) from someone who experiences it in their everyday life.
    -Seul explorez. mon temps préféré était quand je me suis reveillée très tôt le premier matin en Troyes et je marchais autour de la ville tout seul. Aussi, prendre le métro... juste écouter et observer les Français dans ces configurations était un expérience vraiment agréable. Plus, si vous etes tout seul, vous devez à parler francais!!!
    -Bring your celle phone and get an international plan just for the week. Some of the French will have sometime called FreeBox which offers free calls to the IS. This is awesome!!!But if you do want to get a hold of your parents and friends(French or American) in Paris, it's a lot more difficult and expensive.
    -Les Francais peut vous comprendre. N'ecoutéz pas les personnes qui vous disent différemment. Parlez francais autant que possible parce que vous améliorerez. j'ai blagué beaucoup avec mes amis francais que je parle anglais seulement apres 20h, mais, à la fin, vous serez très fier de vous-même que vous avez fait.

    **And for after the trip, my favorite thing is that all of our French "amis" have Facebook!!!!**

    Le voyage de les francais aux
    Etats Unis etait tres amusant, et interesant aussi!
    Les etudiants francais etaient tres occupes, mais je pense qu'ils etaient tres contents aussi. Ils ont achete de souvenirs, et ils ont mange beaucoup de fast food!
    Je ne puex pas espere pour aller en France!
    Les etudiants francais m'ont dit que tout etait tres bon! Mais je sais qu'ils veulent changer "the scavenger hunt," qui etait tres difficile pour tout les etudiants.
    I think the french students had a great time. Other than minor details, like leaving the most demanding activities for when they are more familiar with USC, and America in general, everyone who made this trip possible and organized it did a great job!
    Congrats, and I can't wait to be part of it next year. Thanks for this unique opportunity!

    J’ai aimé le voyage beaucoup ! La aliments – les crêpes, la fromage, les frites – les boissons – le cidre, le champagne, le thé pêche – les villes – Troyes, Mussy sur Seine, Provins, Paris – les événements – le match de football, les soirées, les tours – et, bien sur, les gens ! J’ai rencontré tant de personnes impressionnantes.

    One of my favorite parts of the trip was hanging out in and wandering around Paris…it might have been cool to have a little more “wandering around” time in Troyes. I thought I would do a lot more shopping than I did (hardly any…)…but when it came down to budgeting, I realized that I usually opted to spend more money on food…and think I probably got more enjoyment out of it, and the time it took to eat it, than I would have out of random purchases.

    Words of advice:

    If you know you’re going to be traveling on the Metro or RER, and don’t already have your tickets, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CHANGE IN COINS!!!! If there isn’t a ticket window at your stop, and if you don’t have a European credit card, you WILL find yourself negotiating cash for change swaps…which may eventually dissolve into begging in the metro (which is never a good thing…)…because the ticket machines ONLY take European bank cards and coin change. Or you could risk it and work on your negotiating vocab skills.

    For at least one meal, go to a market and a boulangerie for picnic supplies. Fruit, bread, cheese, Nutella. AWESOME. And take a knife for spreading/cutting.

    J'étais heureuse pendent le voyage (et après bien sûr) car je peux pratiquer parler en français et ressentir la vie français. C’est le but du voyage. J’aimais le plus mes amis à Troyes. Ils me manquent. La nourriture, la culture, les attractions, etc. ne sont pas importants autant que les amis. La gustation du champagne et du fromage était une bonne idée pour le premier week-end parce qu’elle n’est pas trop lourde. La campagne est meilleure que Paris. Et le dernier week-end à Paris oblige les étudiants à utiliser le français.
    If I could go back, I would spend more time actually seeing the modern art museum and the parks and the apothecary like I wanted. Sure the history tour was interesting somewhat, but I could have explored more on my own and saw churches and places that I wanted to see at my own pace. Also, despite that we did not have to pay much, I think that students could have been left to fend for food a lot more often. That is a situation which forces you to try more things, because you have to get creative to be cheap and not eat crèpes the entire time that you are in France.
    Advice:
    --If you like shopping, you will need more money than you think.
    --Get a credit card that is for international use. I am actually looking into getting a card that can be easily used over there (especially since one of my brothers will be in Germany and I'd like to go back). The BNP is great and all, but cash is not always convenient when you have to go looking for it.
    --Buy/pick up stuff in French, like the free maps in museums. And don't hesitate to take off a shoe to find out what your size is in France.
    --Speak French. Even if the French respond in English, keep speaking and they will eventually get the hint.

    Tout le monde parlent français en France! Il était incroyable utiliser mon langue étrangers et être clair pour le premier fois. Aux états unis, je parle en français et mes amis pense que je suis malade a la tête. C’est parce que je suis l’étudiante seule qui étudie le français. Il était plus difficile pratiquer le langue en France que aux états unis parce que les français voudraient pratiquer anglais ! Je déteste quand les français comprennent meilleure en anglais qu’en français ! Vraiment, je dois apprendre du vocabulaire et le grammaire….il y était des moments quand je n’ai pas pu communiquer ou j’ai dit quelqu’un horrible et je n’ai pas su pourquoi mon mot était amusant. Souvent il était sexuel. Je suis désolée, mais ces phrases ne sont pas dans le vocabulaire dans le manuel de classe !
    After the trip I am really excited about going back to France! It helped me to realize how much I can learn and how much I want keep on going. I left feeling really glad that I had studied French and a bit vindicated after those hundreds of times I have had to explain to everyone why I am studying French. Don’t worry, Mama, it was worth it! I love French culture too and the food is definitely as great as everyone said it was. I really enjoyed eating slowly there, but it’s not easy to keep the habit up at home. I had time for three hour meals there, but not here. The generosity of everyone who hosted us was wonderful. The students took a lot of time out of their schedules to be with us too!
    Advice: Plan on not sleeping. Don’t pack homework because it just won’t get done. Try to speak French even when everyone insists on answering in English! Travel with the group and don’t take the RER to Versailles ever, especially if you should be going one hour in the opposite direction. Don’t wear purple pants in France. They don’t work out.

    The most interesting part of the trip to France, for me, was getting to know the French students. I really enjoyed the party at Allison's house and all the other little events we did together. I also really enjoyed the architecture in Troyes and of course, the food!
    La prochain fois que la class va en France, je pense qu'il ne sera pas necessaire de visiter le CRS, ou l'ecole du tourisme ou le centre du jardinage. Ces choses etaient trop bizarre. Je ne pense pas qu'il sont necessaire pour apprendre la vie francais.

    My advice:

    1. Seriously pack as little as possible. Then unpack some of that. Then unpack some more.
    2. On the other hand, bring one or two nicer outfits because you will get tired of looking like a touristy bum.
    3. Eat in moderation!

    J'ai adore le voyage en France! Il n'avait que un chose je n'ai pas aime--quand nous avons visite le fromagerie! Je deteste le fromage. J'ai aime vraiment quand nous avons pris le diner chez Alison et Fabien. C'etait tres amusant! Pour moi, mon chose prefere etait le temps avec Julien! :)

    I loved the trip. I don't know if there was anything I would change other than some of the organization. Sometimes I felt like we were just standing around. My friends made the trip.

    Tips for future travelers:

    Pack light...if I can do it, you can, too!
    Get used to wasting time.
    Be solo for the trip; you may meet someone special. Don't bring dramatic baggage with you.

    Receiving someone in my flat is something quite difficult because you have to change your habbits. But Speaking with an american is great, discovering another culture and trying to show yours ! But one week is too short ! It may be a kind of money wasting ! US people are so cool always happy and smiling, does'nt matter if laugh so loudly :) !

    Le fait de reçevoir quelqu'un surtout un fille dans un studio, il a fallu faire des amenagements. Le fait de faire découvrir mon pays est quelque chose de trés sympatiques. Même moi j'ai appris des choses sur ma ville !

    The next time, I wil change the time of each exchange : 10 days are not long enough. One month would be better for all of us. WHen I was in USA, what was intersting was people I met and differences between our both cultures concerning eating, drinking in bars, parties...

    J'ai beaucoup aimé faire découvrir notre culture et notre style de vie aux américains. J'espère qu'ils ont apprécié. Comme nous avons été en premier là-bas, il était facile de montrer les contrastes entre nous, américains et français.

    I had a fantastic time on this trip to France. It was my first trip to Europe, so there was a lot that was new to me, and it took a little getting used to. I'm glad that we got to see so many different towns around the area. It gave the chance to get a better overall view - a bit of a wider scope, as opposed to the narrow experience of one city. At the same time, it was nice to "live" in the same area for a week, while taking day trips to other areas. I really liked getting to know Troyes well, such that if I went back I would still know my way around a little. It also was nice to have the feeling of coming "home" in the evenings, and we could actually get settled in a little, and didn't have to live out of our suitcases. I think the trips I enjoyed most were those to Mussy-sur-Seine, and Provins. Those were the most beautiful little places I've been, and the atmosphere and history of the places was absolutely captivating. I loved the almost enchanted feeling of the little towns, and found the idea of living in a place like that very appealing. I also enjoyed all of the activities we did with the students on campus - the rock-climbing and the classes, for example. Being able to actually take part in the daily lives of students at their university gives a little more depth to the experience.

    C'est difficile à dire quoi changer. Je pense ce dépendrait vraiment d'étudiants. Les étudiants français participant à la classe l'année prochaine pourraient probablement lui apporter leurs propres perspectives, et auraient de différentes idées de ce que les étudiants américains voudraient voir, et proposeraient de ce fait différentes activités pour le groupe. Jusque le conseil pour les étudiants américains, la première chose que je dois dire est ceci : Prenez les images, et en bon nombre, mais n'oubliez pas de s'arrêter et regarder de ce que vous prenez des photos. C'est bon d'avoir les photos pour quand vous devenez à la maison, et veut se rappeler ce que vous avez fait, et vouloir partager avec les amis et la famille, mais les choses semblent toujours différentes chez la personne, et il est important d'avoir cela à se rappeler aussi bien. En outre, fait des notes de que ce que vous pensez à tout, pas simplement de ce que vous avez fait et avez vu. Vous pouvez seulement expérience quelque chose pour la première fois une fois, et c'est bon de pouvoir se rappeler comme ce que se sent cela, et pour enregistrer vos impressions initiales. Il est difficile de trouver l'heure de faire ceci, mais il est bon en valeu. (même si il signifie perdre une heure de sommeil !)
