What are some Hollywood stereotypes of "Frenchness" or of "American-ness"?

Les films américains aiment stéréptyper les français! J’ai demandé des amies, et ils ont dit que un Français toujours a ces choses: un baguette, une écharpe rouge, un café au lait, un béret et une moustache noire. Il fume, et il est près de l’Arc de Triomphe. (Les américains doivent comprendre qu’il habite à Paris.) American films also make the Frenchman intellectual and sophisticated. He often is the criminal mastermind of the movie, or he is a cultured snob in the background making fun of the rest of the characters. He is never boring! Essentially, the French in American films are romantic figures; they are highly idealized.

Les films americains stereptyper les francais beaucoup. Les francais fument toujours et un homme francais est un snob. Les femmes francais sont souvent belle et sensuel. French people in American films are almost always sarcastic and dry. They drink coffee and seem a little pessimistic, and yet there is something undeniably glamourous about the french

Je pense que les films americains stereotypent les francais comme si tout le monde francais sont romantiques, patriotique, et pleins de vie. Par exemple, dans le film "The Patriot," le personnage de Jean Villeneuve a beaucoup de fierte pour France quand les soldats americains parlent mal de France. Aussi, M. Villeneuve a un grand amour pour sa famille qui est morte. Many movies portray French people as very loving and romantic towards their friends and lovers. Furthermore, many French characters can be viewed as people with a great love and passion for life, food, and fine arts. I don't know how much of these stereotypes are true, but I am sure that many French people are more interesting and well-rounded than some of the fictional characters that are made-up for the movies!

I think that here in France, Americans are portrayed as people who are sure of their superiority, and audacious like don't be affraid to take risk.American are also portrayed as verry patriot.So we can see it in moovies like... (sorry i've forgotten examples).their are different types of Americans in movies. The man who is very ingenious, who alltime find the solution at the last second, who is very logic and sometime very crual.And the crazy man who like to eat fastfood and don't know anything, he's a looser and unlucky man.
C'est vraiment impressionnant de voir comment la television peut influencer l'opinion des gens.Mais seulement il ne faut pas perdre de vue que ces films ne montrent qu'une partie de la société, et que tout le monde n'est pas pareil.Et puis les stereotypes que nous pouvons voir dans les films ne refletent pas toujours la realité car il sont parfois soit utopiques, soit caricaturaux.

I think that according to hollywood french people are lazy and don't like tourist. But they always say that french food are very good. Nowadays all those stereotypes don't exist any more.
In addition american are very proud of their culture and they drink coca cola more than water.
Les américains pensent que les films francais ne sont pas interessants. En effet on remarque bien que les films les plus vus en France sont tous américains.On a par exemple Desperates Housewives ou encore Les freres Scott.

De plus Il n'y a pas beaucoup de séries télévisés qui ont une bonne audition meme en France. Ce qui expliquent qu'aucune d'elle n'aient des echos jusqu'au Etats-Unis. Mais on peut quand meme dire qu'il a de tres bons acteurs francais des les series télévisés américaines

Si vous n'avez pas vu le film "Talladega Nights", allez au cinema! Le personnage, Jean Girrard, est le meilleur exemple d'un stéréotype francais: flamboyant, cultivé, obséde avec crêpes et express. I hope that none of the French students are offended. I think that Americans have a hard time reconciling their relationship with France. Even in the movie, there is a movement of friendship between the all-American Ricky Bobby (who is also an extreme stereotype) and Girrard. If Americans perceive something to be different, they'll just make fun of it to make themselves feel comfortable.

Dans les films américains, les stéréotypes de tout le monde sont exagérés usuellement. Mais c’est presque une tradition pour exagérer les gens françaises beaucoup. Par exemple, si un caractère français dans un film parle l’anglais, son accent est très prononcé, comme le caractère de Steve Martin dans le film récent « The Pink Panther ». In such characterizations, there is also often an element of haughtiness and/or disgust at American culture, as well as the requisite béret, baguette, and cigarette.

I would say there are 2 typical Americans in a French sitcom or movie. The first one is the unbreakable hero. He’s the best agent in the world and he’s going to save the world by himself at the last second. He’s so proud of himself and arrogant that he thinks he can do everything alone without help… When you’re watching American sitcoms for example 24 hours you can see it’s exactly that. So French are making fun of this….
Le deuxième portrait d’un américain est moins valorisant. Il peut s’agir en général d’une personne peu intelligente qui fait essentiellement des bêtises. Je n’ai pas d’exemples qui me reviennent mais je pense que l’on peut en trouver plusieurs. Je pense que certains Français imaginent qu’un américain passe ses journées devant sa télévision à regarder du sport et à ne rien faire d’autre, ce qui implique que les français les caricaturent ainsi. Mais rassurez vous, tous les français ne pensent pas ça ;)

Les français qui ont représenté dans les films américains sont le plupart de Paris. Ces caractères sont dramatique: quelque fois snob, generalement ils sont séduisantes, ils fument, et puisque ils sont de Paris, il y a l’idylle bien sûr! La scène française et idéale d’un film américain est une femme boit la café à un petit café parisien. Films like “Moulin Rouge” and “The Phantom of the Opera” reveal the reality underneath the glamour of early twentieth century nightlife, while other films such as “The Pink Panther” poke fun at the French. From my experience, French films are different in that they focus more on sexuality and reality(“He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not”), and less on happy endings like American films do.

Générallement, les films Americains avoir beaucoup des stéréotypes des français. Une femme est toujours mince, belle, et élégant. Un homme est toujours grand, beau, moustaché, et suave. Il est toujours à un café, avec un roman ou un livre de croquis. Avec ces films il y a toujours une histoire d'amour. The french character is always the central figure in the romance. He or she is always some sort of artist - either a painter, a writer, a dancer, or something like that. Then there is also the stereotypical cartoon of a french man in black, white, and red, wearing a beret, with a very nasal laugh.

En général, les français sont stéréotypes par les américains comme étant des romantiques. la France comme étant un beau pays avec une excellente gastronomie.
Dans les films, on montre souvent la tour Eiffel, le français a table buvant son vin ou des fois des scènes ou il est entrain de lire des poèmes d’amour.
Paris is internationally known as the symbol of Romanticism.
that's the case in many movies such as " French Kiss " 1995 of Lawrence Kasdam or the movie " Tout le monde dit I love you " of Woody Allen 1996 in which we can admire the scene about crazy poetry, dance between Woody Allen and Goldie Hawn.
You can find this scene too in the movie " Americain a Paris " .

In general, in a French film, an American character is sure of himself, arrogant, and very proud of his country. It often holds a pejorative speech on French. One can say that it is rather ethnocentric. For much the religion is of primary importance also. Lastly, very often it’s about a very solitary man.
Cependant, un autre cliché aussi fait fureur. Il s’agit d’un Américain plutôt pauvre, passant son temps devant la télévision à se goinfrer de chips et cacahuètes. Quand il n’est pas devant son poste de télévision, il est au fast-food. C’est un homme inintéressant, sans culture, et vraiment pas très chanceux !

there are many kind of stereotypes of american-ness in france. when you ask a french the stereotype of an american, he will say that it's a fat guy, eating an hamburger, having a gun to protect his family and a little stupid. there is also the shark from wallstreet, who could sell his mother for a good price. and of course, there is the hero, who can save the world just by himself.
je pense qu'une partie des stéréotypes viennent des différences entre nos modes de vie, qui ne sont pas toujours bien comprises. ça ne signifie pas que l'on ne s'aime pas, au contraire, c'est plus amusant de se rendre compte de nos différences. si tout le monde était pareil, ça serait très ennuyant.

A specifically type of American would be John Wayne: a man who smokes while driving; of course he never looks at the way or the street in front of him: he speaks with a wonderful blond woman (who smokes too) who is sat down next to him. Then, movies show patriotism and pride of the US people but I suppose that it is more represented today: at the end of an actual American movie, the national flag always flies in the wind. In conclusion I would say that a star of Hollywood has often black glasses (even in winter) and is always protected like a president!
On a tous en tête des films comme Armageddon, The partriot, aujourd’hui World Trade Center bref, une multitude de films qui illustrent bien ce que j’ai écrit plus haut. On trouve tout de même d’autres types de films plus récents caractéristiques des réalisateurs américains : American pie, just friend, … qui abordent un public plus jeune, et qui décrivent la jeunesse et le début de la période adulte chez l’Américain (l’université, les filles, les fêtes,…). Pour finir, à part ces quelques types bien définis (et j’en oublie) je pense que comme dans tous pays, il y a du très bon cinéma et du très mauvais mais il est vrai que le cinéma américain regorge de talents.

Some american are very patriotic and sometimes change the truth like " Master & Commander" in the reality French battleship win and defeat the american one ! It's sad that the reality is sometimes mistaken by this willing to show that the American are all very proud of their country.
Dans les films français souvent le personage américain est tête brulée pour ressembler au cow-boy cela nous fait penser à chaque fois sur les USA sont un far west.

Generally Americans are stereotyped as arrogant and sure people. As people who think they are always rigtht, good and thus the best to give lessons to the other.They are also potrayed as people who only know their nation and do not show interest to what is happenning all other the world. I am a fan of cinema and what we can see in American movies like 24 hours with Mister Jack Bauer is that he is someone who is ready to sacrifice himself to save his nation, it is heroic and I really like that.
La jeunesse americaine est décrit dans les films comme étant une jeunesse sans diplomatie, violente et qui n'hésite pas à arriver aux armes dès que ca ne va pas, révélateur d'un accès facile aux armes et à la drogue. Cependant ne perdons pas de vue la réalité et ne laissons surtout pas notre opinion influencé par ces caricatures, car ce ne sont que des portraits et donc non représentatif de la réalité elle même.

Many restaurant in France call their menu like 'american menu' because there is coca cola in.
En France, il y a beaucoup de séries américaines qui passent à la TV comme l'une des dernières qui se nomme
'Desperate Housewives'. Personnellement, je ne connais aucune série française :( Et j'adore les séries américaines !!
